getting to know my son…from afar.
I think about my son every day. I see him in little boys I see at the grocery store.
I see him in the mirror, as he looks a lot like me.
I chose a semi-open adoption, primarily for the sakes of the adoptive couple. I wanted them to feel secure in the situation, and that I wasn’t going to just pop in or call. I wanted a mediator. I chose to have all contact channelled through the adoption agency, including pictures on request. Sometimes they send me photos without me asking, which truly brightens my day. I put the pictures in an album and to flip through it is to see him grow from a buddah-bellied baby to the lean, outgoing seven year old he has become.
The photos are usually accompanied by hand-written letters, updating me on his school life, activities he enjoys, books he’s read. These truly make my life rich. I know he is having so much fun with this semi-affluent couple I chose to raise my son.
The photos show a happy, tanned young boy skateboarding, digging in the sand at the beach, and rolling on the ground with the two collies the family has. The father has two older sons from a previous marriage, the youngest a senior in high school. I was glad for that, as I think having siblings teaches you many valuable things in life.
I was glad he had a family.
